Lee Jae-yong Reviews AI Chip Battleground in Japan, Strengthens Advanced Packaging Cooperation

Chips1 min read

Samsung Electronics chairman Lee Jae-yong visited a Samsung advanced packaging research center in Yokohama, Japan, to check progress on chip technology for AI. The lab is working with Japanese materials and equipment companies.

What happened

On the 1st, Samsung said Lee Jae-yong visited the Advanced Package Lab (APL) in Yokohama. It was his first on-site check since the lab opened on September 8, about two months earlier. He looked at research on materials and manufacturing steps for advanced packaging. He also talked with Japanese suppliers about working together. He asked the team to secure advanced packaging technology, which is now a key part of AI chip competitiveness.

Key numbers and facts

  • APL opened on September 8 (this year).
  • Samsung set up APL in 2023 and plans to invest 40 billion yen (about 350 billion won) from 2024 over five years.
  • The lab focuses on core technologies such as materials and processes for advanced packaging.
  • Yokohama is near Tokyo and has many related companies and research institutes.

What is advanced packaging?

Advanced packaging joins several chips, such as GPUs, high-bandwidth memory (HBM), and accelerator chips, into one package. This helps data move between chips faster, saves power, and controls heat. These things affect how well AI systems perform. APL links Samsung's chip design and manufacturing skills with Japan's strengths in materials, parts, and equipment.

Why it matters

AI needs very fast and efficient chips. Packaging is becoming as important as the chips themselves. By strengthening APL and its work with Japanese partners, Samsung hopes to build better next-generation products and compete more strongly in the AI chip market.

What to watch

  • Whether APL expands into wafer bonding and glass substrates.
  • How the lab works with Samsung's domestic packaging research team.
  • Whether the number of local researchers in Yokohama keeps growing.
  • How Samsung's new packaging structures for low-power, high-performance chips move toward mass production.

Glossary

Funding for 300mm Wafer Production in Itzehoe Handed Over to Vishay

Semiconductor maker Vishay plans to invest a "high three-digit million" amount in its Itzehoe site in Schleswig-Holstein, reportedly around one billion euros. Schleswig-Holstein's economy minister Claus Ruhe Madsen handed over a funding notice of about 215 million euros, and the site will add 300mm wafer production for power MOSFETs, with up to 250 new jobs expected. The EU Commission has already approved the aid.

Backbone of a beast – charting Nvidia's rise to networking titan

Nvidia has become a major networking vendor with larger datacenter Ethernet sales than any other company, reporting over $17.5 billion in networking revenue in Q2, compared with Cisco's $17.3 billion across all products in the same period. The article traces this shift to the 2019 $6.9 billion acquisition of Mellanox, which gave Nvidia InfiniBand and ConnectX technology and helped it position itself as a system builder. Analysts and customers credit its tightly integrated compute and networking architecture for simplifying deployments and optimization.

Sam Altman says it’s better for RAM to be in a data center than on your desk

Asked about the ongoing RAM shortage, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a Cheeky Pint podcast interview that it is "terrible" for the world's limited DRAM supply to sit in personal computers used only about five percent of the time. He argued that maximum utilization in the cloud is needed in a supply-constrained environment, and noted that memory makers Samsung and SK Hynix have long-term deals with cloud operators and projects like OpenAI's Stargate that have reserved much of the world's RAM output over the next few years.

AI inference chip startup Nano-core Chip raises over RMB 1 billion in Series C2 funding

Hangzhou-based AI inference chip developer Nano-core Chip announced it raised more than RMB 1 billion in Series C2 funding, led by JianTou Investment with participation from Hangzhou Capital and Kaitai Capital. The company plans to use the proceeds for product development and preparation for volume production. It said its first three chips have completed tape-out, with customer sampling and initial volume shipments planned for early 2027.
