"Does Holding More Meetings Mean More Work Gets Done?" Zoom Moves to Change Work Methods with AI
Software1 min read
Zoom, the video meeting app, is using AI to change how people work. The company says the goal is to help workers get more done, not to hold more meetings.
What happened
Zoom's product and engineering president, Velchamy Shankarlingam, spoke with Korean reporters at Zoom's headquarters in San Jose, California. He said that holding more meetings does not mean more work gets finished. Zoom is now building AI tools that do follow-up work after meetings, not just take notes.
Zoom's past and present
Zoom grew very fast during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many people worked from home. After the pandemic ended, demand for video calls dropped. Zoom is now adding features for hybrid work, where people work partly in the office and partly at home, and selling AI tools that automate office tasks.
Key facts
- Zoom's AI meeting notes tool is called 'My Notes'.
- Users can get an AI summary of meetings they missed.
- The summary can show decisions, unfinished tasks, and next steps from meetings held over the past week.
- Zoom plans to add Korean real-time translation and contact center features in Korea soon.
Why it matters
Many companies spend lots of time in meetings. If AI can handle summaries and follow-up tasks, workers may spend less time in meetings and more time on real work. Zoom also says it is protecting company data by limiting what AI can access, and it is building tools to spot deepfakes, which are fake voices or videos made by AI. Korea is an important market for Zoom, and the company named Korean Air and LG as partners.
