Windows 11 tries new shortcuts for Xbox gaming mode and search

Software1 min read

Microsoft is testing new Windows 11 features in its Insider preview builds. The changes add quick settings to Xbox mode and make the search box much more powerful.

What happened

Microsoft's latest Windows 11 Insider build adds shortcuts while the PC is in Xbox gaming mode. Players can change Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and power settings without leaving gaming mode. The update also improves Windows search a lot.

Key facts

  • Two test builds are out now: Beta Build 26220.9836 and Experimental Build 26340.9843.
  • Search results can be filtered into files, actions, or web results.
  • Search can change screen brightness or volume, and can act on a connected phone, including making calls.
  • Thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons let users teach search to get better over time.

What is Insider?

Windows Insider is a program where people can try new Windows features before they reach everyone. Test builds can have bugs, so they are often used by people who want to try new things early.

Why it matters

These changes could make Windows easier to use without a mouse or keyboard, especially on a gaming device. A search box that can do tasks, not just find files, could save time for everyone. The features are still in testing, so they may change before a full release.

What to watch

  • Whether these features reach all Windows 11 users in a later update.
  • How well the search actions and phone controls work in daily use.
  • Any changes Microsoft makes based on feedback from Insiders.

Chocolate Caterpillar or Chocolate Teapot? Top up the disk space for Windows 10 to find out

A Marks & Spencer food hall sign on London's Oxford Street appears to show a Windows 10 error reporting low disk space, spotted by Register reader Aaron Colwill. He suspected Windows 10 21H2 LTSC was the cause, noting that LTSC 2021 support runs until January 12, 2027. The article jokingly contrasts the sign's storage demands, which require at least 32 GB, with a simple poster, and quips that a chocolate-based advert on a fragile operating system is fitting.

Developer Snacks: dotnetup Instead of rustup, Node 27, Rust Web Framework

Microsoft has released dotnetup, a toolchain manager for the .NET ecosystem, as a public preview, modeled on rustup and nvm and designed to keep .NET environments consistent across platforms. Also in brief: PDFsharp moved from MIT to a dual AGPL/commercial license in a minor release, angering the community, and a Node 27 alpha built on V8 15.6.75.13 raised its heap limit to half of physical memory (between 256 MB and 4 GB).

"Red Alert" turns 30: Why the C&C sequel is still cult

Westwood Studios' 1995 "Command & Conquer" was a landmark real-time strategy game, and its sequel "Red Alert" is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The follow-up keeps the core formula of the original while changing nearly everything around it, moving the story to 1946 with an alternate history in which Einstein removes Hitler from the timeline. Players can control either the Allies or the Soviets, whose units play noticeably differently.
