"Red Alert" turns 30: Why the C&C sequel is still cult

Software1 min read

Command & Conquer: Alarmstufe Rot (Red Alert) turns 30 this year. It is a classic strategy game from 1996 that is still loved today. The article looks at why the game is still so popular.

A game that turns 30

The game is a sequel to Command & Conquer, which came out in 1995. Westwood Studios made both games. Red Alert keeps the same basic idea but changes almost everything around it. It moves the story back to 1946, and players can take control of either side.

A different story

In the game, Albert Einstein uses a time machine to travel back to 1924. There he meets Adolf Hitler, who had just left prison, and removes him from history. This means World War II never happens. Without Nazi Germany as an enemy, the Soviet Union under Josef Stalin grows very strong. Only a new alliance of Western European countries can stop him. The game asks who will win: the Soviets or the Allies.

Why it is still fun

The game was first planned as an add-on. As development went on, it grew into a full game of its own. Many units and maps were reused from the first game, and the easy controls stayed the same. The biggest new feature was two very different sides. The Soviets have slow but strong units, such as huge tanks and rocket launchers. The Allies have faster, weaker units, heavy artillery, and a strong navy.

Why it matters

Red Alert shows that a sequel does not need to change its core to be a hit. By keeping the proven formula and changing the setting and the two sides, it gave fans something new and familiar at once. That is why many players still remember it as a classic.

Chocolate Caterpillar or Chocolate Teapot? Top up the disk space for Windows 10 to find out

A Marks & Spencer food hall sign on London's Oxford Street appears to show a Windows 10 error reporting low disk space, spotted by Register reader Aaron Colwill. He suspected Windows 10 21H2 LTSC was the cause, noting that LTSC 2021 support runs until January 12, 2027. The article jokingly contrasts the sign's storage demands, which require at least 32 GB, with a simple poster, and quips that a chocolate-based advert on a fragile operating system is fitting.

Developer Snacks: dotnetup Instead of rustup, Node 27, Rust Web Framework

Microsoft has released dotnetup, a toolchain manager for the .NET ecosystem, as a public preview, modeled on rustup and nvm and designed to keep .NET environments consistent across platforms. Also in brief: PDFsharp moved from MIT to a dual AGPL/commercial license in a minor release, angering the community, and a Node 27 alpha built on V8 15.6.75.13 raised its heap limit to half of physical memory (between 256 MB and 4 GB).

Adobe Rival? How Good Is the AI Clone PhotoCraft? | c't uplink

In early October 2026, ArtCraft released vibe-coded clones of Photoshop, Lightroom and other Adobe creative programs, followed shortly after by imitations of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and other software; it currently offers 13 free programs. In the c't uplink podcast, c't editor André Kramer, who tested the Photoshop and Lightroom clones, describes impressive but also disappointing aspects, noting that the menus, palettes and tool icons are all there but it is unclear whether they are backed by working functions. He calls ArtCraft an interesting concept study but says it must be judged differently as a productive tool.
