NHS breach helpline left staff carrying a 'significant emotional burden'

Security1 min read

A review has found that NHS staff who ran a helpline after a data breach were badly affected. The breach exposed the health and sickness records of thousands of people at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.

What happened

Staff at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust were moved to a helpline after their colleagues' health data was leaked online. The helpline was meant to run for two weeks. It ran for 11 weeks. A review says the work caused a "serious emotional impact" on the staff who answered the calls.

Key numbers and facts

  • The breach affected 8,003 people, including current and former trust staff and non-trust workers.
  • The helpline was supposed to run for 2 weeks in December 2025. It was closed after 11 weeks, in February 2026.
  • Staff were told about the helpline just one day before they had to start.
  • The leaked spreadsheet included sickness records for 7,715 staff and 288 non-trust workers.

How the data leaked

In February 2023, the trust answered a Freedom of Information request. It posted a spreadsheet on its public disclosure log. The file still held hidden sickness records. Users could see them through a pivot table, which is a tool that sorts and summarises data in a spreadsheet. A member of the public found the problem in November 2025.

Why it matters

The review shows that people who help others after a data leak need support too. The call handlers had little training and no clear process. They had to judge safety risks, such as people in danger from abuse, with no plan. Many also found out their own data was exposed while they were already working. The review says this put a heavy emotional load on them.

What to watch

  • The full review is published online and has been shared with staff.
  • Trust officials discussed the findings at a board meeting.
  • Watch for changes to how the NHS plans and supports staff during future data breaches.

Government Warns of Refrigeration Equipment Hacking, Urges Private Sector Security Checks

Amid a string of overseas hacks on refrigeration equipment that caused food spoilage, South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT has shared foreign cases with private operators and industry groups and recommended security inspections. Attackers targeted remote control devices that can change equipment temperature and operating hours from outside stores or cold storage facilities. Recommended measures include changing default passwords, updating firmware, and restricting external access to protected networks such as VPNs; the ministry says no domestic damage has been reported so far.

Supermarket Cooling Systems: German Intelligence Agencies Investigate Sabotage Attacks

Following massive cyberattacks on supermarket cooling systems, German intelligence services have joined police investigations. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) said the incidents are the subject of current intelligence inquiries, and the joint hybrid threats center GAZ Hybrid is also looking into the matter. Attackers manipulated temperature controls in refrigerators and freezers, with incidents reported in Germany and several other European countries.

Brenner Base Tunnel: Cyberattack on Construction Company

The project company building the Brenner Base Tunnel between Austria and Italy, BBT SE, was the target of a cyberattack in mid-October. Unknown attackers accessed parts of data that could be reached from the internet, but BBT said no risks to construction or future operation arose and high-security data was not affected. Italian authorities are leading the investigation, as BBT is based in Bolzano.

"I Thought It Was a Robot Malfunction, but It Was a Hack": Physical AI Faces Growing Security Threats

As AI expands into robots and self-driving cars, cyberattacks that subtly distort AI perception can be hard to tell apart from normal environmental adaptation, potentially causing injuries or equipment accidents. Gartner's report says traditional network-centric security is not enough, recommending physical safety mechanisms independent of AI models, separation of security inspections from real-time control paths, and independent monitoring systems.
