Musk mocks Altman, says everyone deserves RAM too

AI2 min read

Elon Musk made fun of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on X. Musk said everyone deserves to own RAM, the computer memory chips, after Altman said it was bad for users to run AI on their own devices.

Musk mocks Altman over RAM

On November 2, Elon Musk posted on X that everyone deserves to own RAM. He shared a meme of an actor from the film Inglourious Basterds, with the caption asking whether OpenAI was keeping cloud DRAM for itself. The post was a reply to Sam Altman, who said on October 30 that it was bad for users to run AI on their own devices and that RAM should be saved for data centers instead. Musk also posted other jokes, including a meme about using 64 GB of RAM to play Roller Coaster Tycoon, a simple game that does not need a powerful computer. Altman did not reply.

From friends to rivals

Musk and Altman were once close. Years ago, when Altman led the startup accelerator Y Combinator, he met Musk and visited SpaceX's rocket factory. By 2017, the relationship had broken down. According to court emails, Musk wanted control of OpenAI and to become its CEO. Altman disagreed and won the support of other co-founders. Musk left the company in 2018. Musk later started xAI in 2023. The two have often fought in public on social media since then.

Key facts

  • Musk sued OpenAI and Altman last year and asked for $134 billion in damages. He lost the case.
  • In July, Apple sued OpenAI, claiming it stole trade secrets. Musk and Altman then attacked each other online again.
  • In September, Musk said his Colossus 2 data center in Memphis holds more than 550,000 AI chips.
  • Colossus 2 includes 110,000 Nvidia GB200 GPUs and 440,000 GB300 GPUs, which is estimated at 147 petabytes of memory.

Why it matters

RAM prices have jumped because of the boom in AI data centers. Musk's comment sides with ordinary users who want more memory in their own devices. Still, Musk runs one of the most memory-hungry facilities in the world, so his stance is also a joke at his own expense. The story shows how the feud between two top AI leaders keeps going on social media.

What to watch

  • Whether Altman or OpenAI replies to Musk's posts.
  • Whether RAM prices keep rising as AI data centers grow.
  • How the Apple lawsuit against OpenAI develops.

Glossary

RAM
Computer memory that stores data while a device is working. It is faster than storage but is erased when the device is turned off.

xAI
An AI company founded by Elon Musk in 2023.
SpaceX
A rocket and space company founded by Elon Musk. It builds rockets and satellites.

Vintage fun: Prodding AI agents using retro hardware just because you can

AWS developer advocate Darko Mesaroš connected a DECwriter teletype to AWS Kiro, a command-line agentic coding service, so the teletype can serve as a terminal for AI agents. He used a WiModem232 to emulate a Hayes-compatible modem for the serial connection and a Rust application to convert Kiro's output, obtained via Agent Client Protocol (ACP), into a format a teletype could handle. Mesaroš said the approach should work with any ACP-compatible coding assistant, though it lacks packet-drop handling and buffering.

Hanmi Pharmaceutical Builds Domestic Chatbot Infrastructure for Digital Healthcare Platform 'eppiday'

Hanmi Pharmaceutical has signed a strategic MOU with FuriosaAI, Xperix, and its healthcare subsidiary Baegle Labs to move the AI chatbot of its digital healthcare platform 'eppiday' to a Korean LLM and domestic AI infrastructure. Under the agreement, Baegle Labs will handle app and chatbot development, Xperix will provide domestic AI servers and LLM inference, and FuriosaAI will supply domestic AI chips. The four companies have verified in a test environment that the AI coaching answer generation can run on domestic servers, and the commercial launch timing will be set after quality and safety checks.

Anthropic Manager Drops Coding Tests in Hiring as AI Outperforms Humans

Felix Rieseberg, Anthropic's recruiting manager, says the company has stopped using live coding tests in hiring because its Claude models now write code better than humans. Instead, he is looking at candidates' portfolios for taste, empathy and principled thinking, and values those who build prototypes with AI. Surveys cited in the article show AI is making technical assessment harder for employers, with system design, debugging and AI collaboration gaining weight.

SenseTime open-sources 9-billion-parameter AI model that reuses layers for deeper processing

SenseTime has released SenseNova Loop-9B-Preview, an open-source multimodal model announced October 30 that reuses computation to extend processing depth without duplicating weights. It accepts text and images and generates text for document understanding, coding, and tool-use tasks, running a shared block of 24 decoder layers twice from a model of about nine billion parameters. SenseTime has published the weights, inference instructions, and training guidance under the Apache 2.0 license.
