Gemini for Home now plugs into AT&T’s smart security system

Software1 min read

AT&T's smart home security system now works with Gemini for Home, Google's AI helper for smart homes. The new features can describe what cameras see and let people search video with plain questions.

What happened

AT&T added Gemini for Home to its Connected Life security system. AT&T says Connected Life is the first home security product to work with Google Home Premium. Gemini can now write short descriptions of camera events, such as who delivered a package and how many items they left. You can also ask questions about your recorded video, like "What dug up the yard last night?" AT&T is also adding a feature that can arm or disarm your home based on how close your phone is to home.

Key facts

  • The AT&T Connected Life monitoring plan costs $29.99 a month.
  • Only people on this professional plan can use the Gemini features.
  • AT&T launched Connected Life last December, with Google and Abode as partners.
  • ADT, another home security company, has hinted it may add Gemini for Home too.

Background

Gemini for Home is Google's AI assistant for smart home devices. Google's Gemini-powered Home APIs let smart home companies and app developers build AI features into their own products. AT&T is using these tools to add AI to its security system.

Why it matters

This shows AI is moving into home security. Instead of scrolling through hours of video, people can ask a question and get a quick answer. The feature is only available on a paid plan, so people who want it will need to pay more.

What to watch

  • Whether ADT brings Gemini for Home features to its security systems.
  • How well the video search answers real questions from users.
  • Whether other security companies add similar AI features.

VMware returns to low-end server virtualization with 'vSphere Express'

VMware has re-entered the low-end server virtualization market with vSphere Express, which runs on up to 128 processor cores and includes vMotion, automated restart of failed VMs, a distributed switch, non-disruptive patching, and virtual TPM support. Each instance is discrete and cannot be managed centrally, and it will be sold through distributors' cloud marketplaces on a per-core subscription at a price "significantly lower" than VVF or VCF. VMware also added disaster recovery and policy-based networking to VVF and VCF, which were previously add-ons.
