Etsy is cracking down on AI slop listings
Software1 min read
Etsy, the online marketplace for handmade and creative goods, is adding stricter rules on how AI can be used in product listings. The goal is to cut down on "AI slop," a word for low-quality, misleading content made by AI.
New rules for AI in listings
Etsy says many buyers cannot tell which items use AI-generated content. Sellers are also worried that their own work will look like items that use AI in misleading ways. So Etsy is adding new rules. Every listing must include at least one real, unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. All photos must show the item the buyer will actually get. Other photos can be edited with software or AI tools, but the result must still be an accurate picture of the real product.
Key facts
- Every listing needs at least one unedited photo of the real item on a real background.
- If Etsy thinks an uploaded image may be AI-generated, a pop-up asks the seller whether AI was used.
- If a buyer says the item is "materially different" from the listing, the seller may have to give a refund.
- Listings made by bots are no longer allowed.
- AI-generated art is still allowed, but the seller must say it was made with AI.
What are functional guides?
Some sellers offer guides such as patterns, recipes, or instructions. Etsy says the information in these guides must be the seller's own work, not made by AI. Sellers must also show an actual result made from the guide.
Why it matters
These rules aim to make shopping more honest. Buyers should get what the photo shows, and honest sellers should not lose trust because of misleading listings. Shoppers who buy handmade or creative items on Etsy may now see clearer proof of what they are buying.
What to watch
- How well Etsy's pop-up and detection tools catch AI-made images.
- Whether refund rules lead to more buyer complaints or seller disputes.
- How sellers of patterns, recipes, and guides adjust their products.
