Canva: Restructuring and Job Cuts

Software2 min read

Canva, an Australian software company, is cutting jobs and restructuring the whole company. About 22 percent of its staff are affected. The company says it needs to change to keep growing in the AI era.

What happened

Canva announced job cuts and a major reorganization. CEO Melanie Perkins shared the news with staff in a message posted on the company website on Tuesday. She called it a "very difficult message." She did not name an exact number of people who will lose their jobs. She said the company must become leaner and work in small, self-managed teams.

Key numbers and facts

  • 1,271 employees are affected, which is 22 percent of the staff.
  • Affected people will lose their job, take a different role, or move to one of Canva's main offices.
  • Canva's value fell from a high of 40 billion US dollars in 2021 to about 26 billion US dollars the next year.
  • From January, most hybrid workers should spend about 2 to 3 days a week in the office. Sydney will become the main hub for many product teams.

Background: the AI shake-up

Canva makes tools for editing photos and videos. AI tools such as Claude from Anthropic and ChatGPT from OpenAI let users do more tasks without special software. This puts pressure on companies like Canva. Software firms also need fewer workers when they use AI themselves. The open-source software company SUSE recently announced large job cuts because of automation and AI.

Why it matters

This shows how AI is changing the software industry. Even a large and successful company must reorganize to stay strong. Canva is also reportedly preparing for a possible stock market listing, which makes this change important for its future. News agency Bloomberg says the restructuring puts the company in a financially sensitive position, and the full effects are not yet clear.

What to watch

  • How many people will actually lose their jobs.
  • Whether Canva moves ahead with a stock market listing.
  • How the company's value changes after the restructuring.
  • How the new small teams and office plan work in practice from January.

Gemini for Home now plugs into AT&T’s smart security system

AT&T's Connected Life smart home security system now integrates with Gemini for Home, which the company says makes it the "first" home security product to work with Google Home Premium. Gemini-powered features can describe camera events such as package deliveries, let users search video history with natural language questions, and provide daily activity summaries. These features require AT&T's $29.99/month Connected Life monitoring plan, and AT&T is also adding automatic arming and disarming based on proximity to the home.

VMware returns to low-end server virtualization with 'vSphere Express'

VMware has re-entered the low-end server virtualization market with vSphere Express, which runs on up to 128 processor cores and includes vMotion, automated restart of failed VMs, a distributed switch, non-disruptive patching, and virtual TPM support. Each instance is discrete and cannot be managed centrally, and it will be sold through distributors' cloud marketplaces on a per-core subscription at a price "significantly lower" than VVF or VCF. VMware also added disaster recovery and policy-based networking to VVF and VCF, which were previously add-ons.

God of War Laufey delayed until May

Developer Santa Monica Studio has delayed God of War Laufey to May 20, 2027, from its previously set February 16 launch on PlayStation 5. The studio said it will use the extra time to add finishing touches and push the game to its fullest potential. Laufey stars Faye, Kratos's wife, voiced again by Deborah Ann Woll, and focuses more on acrobatic action than recent God of War games.
