VMware quietly offers European users extended sales and support for low-end vSphere

Software1 min read

VMware has quietly extended sales and support for some older low-end vSphere products in Europe. The change came in a blog post about a new budget product called vSphere Express.

What happened

VMware, a company that makes software for running many virtual computers on one server, told European customers that it will keep selling vSphere Standard and vSphere Enterprise Plus version 8 until October 31, 2027. Those customers will also get Extended Support until October 31, 2028, or until their subscription ends, whichever comes first. This paragraph was not in the first version of the blog post that VMware sent to reporters.

Key dates and facts

  • Sales of vSphere Standard and Enterprise Plus version 8 in Europe continue until October 31, 2027.
  • Extended Support in Europe lasts until October 31, 2028, or the subscription end date if that comes first.
  • The normal end of general support for vSphere 8 is October 11, 2027.
  • The extension gives European users up to about 12 extra months to upgrade or move their workloads.

Why this is happening

Broadcom bought VMware, and some customers were unhappy with the changes that followed. European groups have asked regulators to look at the deal again. The European Commission has opened an antitrust investigation into whether VMware's sales changes hurt cloud providers. Analysts think this extension may be a response to that pressure.

Why it matters

This gives European businesses more time to plan their move to newer products. An analyst says it is a helpful step, but it only buys a little more time. Customers outside Europe do not get the same deal, and the analyst says they should speak up to get the same help.

What to watch

  • Whether VMware shares the full details of the extended support, including what it will cover.
  • Whether VMware makes the same offer in other countries.
  • What the European Commission decides after its antitrust investigation.

When datacenters lose power, generators should kick in. That didn’t happen for Google in London

Google Cloud says an October 20 outage in its europe-west-2-b London availability zone was caused by a misconfiguration that stopped its emergency generators from starting. A cable failure on the primary feeder, during maintenance that had one feeder breaker open, left the UPS systems to run out of power, disrupting services for customers including Lloyds, HSBC, Royal Mail, and Revolut. Google says it reprogrammed the PLC and made electrical changes, and has two action items focused on faster customer notification and broader platform-wide testing.

YouTube Expands Revenue Ecosystem with OTT Distribution and Shopping

YouTube is broadening its revenue opportunities through partnerships with global OTT services and shopping features that link video viewing to purchases, with South Korea highlighted as one of its key shopping markets. Google Korea's Seo Hwang-wook said YouTube's 2 billion users and combination of long-form and short-form content create strong marketing opportunities, and noted that 60% of global YouTube viewing time occurs on TVs.
