The Duo apps are coming, says Apple

Devices1 min read

Apple says more than 100,000 apps now work well with its new foldable iPhone, the Duo. This answers early criticism that the phone lacked apps built for its screen.

Apple adds apps for the Duo

Apple says over 100,000 apps built for the Duo are now on the App Store. It also released more than a dozen well-known apps that are ready for the Duo, such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Zoom, and Netflix-style favorites like YouTube. Apple says thousands more apps are added every day.

Key numbers

  • More than 100,000 apps built for the Duo are live on the App Store.
  • Thousands more apps are added to the store every day.
  • More than 2,000 app developers went to over 50 in-person workshops in 19 cities.
  • The Duo starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model.

Why some apps looked bad

Apps that are not made for the Duo show a black bar on the side of the screen. This wastes space. Some apps also hide important buttons in an overflow menu, which is a pop-up list of extra options. Apple's data suggests some developers needed more time to update their apps for this new screen shape.

Why it matters

The Duo is popular, and it sold out within hours. Shipping times now stretch into next year, and Apple says it is hard to predict when this will get better. Strong app support helps make a costly new phone worth buying. Apple's list of updated apps, including Spotify, ChatGPT, and Tesla Robotaxi, shows the push is growing.

What to watch

  • Whether the listed apps, such as Spotify, fully roll out their Duo updates.
  • Whether Spotify and other apps stop showing the black bar on the Duo.
  • How fast more apps get Duo-optimized updates.
  • When Duo shipping times improve.

Self-Powered Toothbrush Uses Electricity to Kill Bacteria

Chinese researchers have developed a self-powered toothbrush that converts the friction of brushing into electricity to suppress plaque-forming bacteria, according to reports citing Live Science and New Atlas. The study, published in Science Advances, found the piezoelectric PVDF bristles killed over half of Streptococcus mutans in tests, and removed more than 99% of human plaque on bovine enamel versus 80% for nylon. A 115-person, three-month clinical evaluation showed reduced levels of several pathogenic bacteria, though researchers and an outside expert noted that long-term oral health benefits remain to be confirmed.
