Nexon Launches Mission Challenge for MapleStory Global Development Contest

Software1 min read

Nexon, the game company behind MapleStory, is running a mission challenge. Players can try the finalist games from its MapleStory global game-making contest and earn rewards. Their play also helps decide the final winners.

What happened

Nexon Korea said on the 5th that it is running the 'Global Development Contest Mission Challenge'. Players visit the finalist worlds and finish simple tasks, such as defeating monsters, clearing stages, finishing quests, and reaching levels. Each mission gives 50 World Coins. The event runs until the 25th. Some finalist worlds will also be shown during a broadcast event with well-known streamers.

Key numbers

  • More than 400 worlds were entered in the contest.
  • Nexon picked 30 finalist worlds after an internal review.
  • Seven final winners will be chosen next month.
  • Each finalist team gets about 50 million won in support money.
  • Each final winning team gets an extra 40 million won in support money.

What is the contest?

The contest is meant to find new creators from around the world. They will use the MapleStory intellectual property (IP), which means the characters, world, and stories that belong to the game, to make new game content. The contest uses MapleStory World, a sandbox platform. A sandbox platform is a tool where users can build their own small games and worlds.

Why it matters

This event lets regular players help pick the winners, not just judges. It also shows how Nexon wants to grow its user-made games. For creators, the contest offers money and a chance to join a support program for building on MapleStory World.

What to watch

  • Whether the mission challenge ends on the 25th as planned.
  • How players' play data is combined with the internal judges' scores.
  • The seven final winners, which Nexon plans to announce next month.
  • More details on the official MapleStory World website.

Discord is ditching Electron and its new app uses less RAM

Discord is moving its desktop app fully to Rust, abandoning the Electron framework that its chief technology officer, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, says is notoriously heavy on system resources. He shared an image of the Discord Windows client using 290MB of RAM, compared with the 1GB or more that the current Windows app can reach. Discord has not said when the full switch will happen, but Vishnevskiy said the company hopes to get it into user testing soon.

When datacenters lose power, generators should kick in. That didn’t happen for Google in London

Google Cloud says an October 20 outage in its europe-west-2-b London availability zone was caused by a misconfiguration that stopped its emergency generators from starting. A cable failure on the primary feeder, during maintenance that had one feeder breaker open, left the UPS systems to run out of power, disrupting services for customers including Lloyds, HSBC, Royal Mail, and Revolut. Google says it reprogrammed the PLC and made electrical changes, and has two action items focused on faster customer notification and broader platform-wide testing.
