Meta brings Conductor on board its model train
AI1 min read
Meta has bought Conductor, a startup that runs several AI coding agents at once. Conductor's hosted cloud service will shut down, but its Mac app will keep working for a few months.
What happened
Meta bought Conductor, a small startup that helps software teams run AI coding agents. Conductor's CEO, Charlie Holtz, announced the deal in a blog post. The company's hosted Conductor Cloud will go read-only on November 13 and shut down on November 20. The Mac app will keep running for a few more months. In early 2027, it will stop getting new AI models and important bug fixes. The price of the deal was not announced.

Why Meta is buying AI startups
Meta has spent a lot on its AI research lab. Since April, it has been more careful about big purchases. Its other AI buys this year, such as Moltbook, Assured Robot Intelligence, and Stilla, are smaller. Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, wants AI agents that people with no tech skills can use to run small businesses. Meta also plans to make money from transaction fees, selling AI model access, and charging for its Muse tool.
Why it matters
AI model makers are now buying tools that help build with AI, because the models alone are less special than before. OpenAI and Anthropic have made similar buys. This shows that the big AI companies want to own more of the tools developers use every day.
