LG held a safety and environment conference in Magok, Seoul, to share how its affiliates are using AI to make workplaces safer. Most of the 21 shared cases used AI.
LG shares AI safety ideas at its SHEC conference
On the 4th and 5th, LG held its safety, health and environment conference, called 'LG SHEC', at LG Science Park in Magok, Seoul. The event spreads safety know-how and helps safety staff at its affiliates build their skills. This year's theme was 'Drive the Shift.' LG said the goal was to change how safety work is done and put new ideas into action on site, as AI and robots change industry quickly. Staff from 16 affiliates attended, and the event was also streamed online with AI interpretation in Chinese, Vietnamese and other languages.
Key numbers
- About 350 safety staff attended, roughly 10% of all LG safety staff.
- 20 safety staff from overseas sites in the US, China, India and Poland visited.
- 15 of the 21 innovation cases shared this year used AI.
- LG Electronics connected 4,226 CCTV cameras to one AI system.
- LG Display cut a workplace review from 30 minutes to 6 minutes.
What the new AI tools do
LG Electronics' system does more than spot danger. The AI can directly control equipment, stopping machines or blocking entry and sounding alarms when risks appear. LG Display's system watches work videos to judge strain on workers' backs and shoulders, then suggests fixes. LG Chem built an AI agent to check that process safety rules were followed in areas such as equipment changes and inspections. LG U+'s app helps partner companies list hazards and suggests ways to reduce them.
Why this matters
Chemical plants and factories can have deadly fires and explosions, so safety checks must be fast and accurate. These tools can catch problems sooner and reduce paperwork for workers. LG says AI and new ways of working make this a good time to raise safety standards, and it plans to help spread these cases to all its sites so workers can feel safe on the job.
What to watch
- Whether the shared cases are actually adopted at other LG sites.
- How well AI control systems perform when real emergencies happen.
- Results from the safety quiz 'Master SHEC' and the six site awards given this year.
