KT Also Halts New 3G Sign-Ups After SK Telecom...3G Network Heads Toward Shutdown
Devices2 min read
SK Telecom and KT have both stopped signing up new customers for their 3G mobile networks. Korea's 3G service is now on its way to shutting down.
Both carriers stop new 3G sign-ups
KT stopped new sign-ups, number transfers, and device changes from today for 3G phones and for LTE phones that do not support HD Voice. SK Telecom began the same limits on August 20. Both companies plan to shut down 3G after getting government approval, and then focus on LTE and 5G.
Key facts
- SK Telecom and KT launched 3G service in 2003, so this is the first time in 23 years they stop taking new users.
- SK Telecom aims to end its 3G service by the end of 2027.
- KT will set its final shutdown date after getting approval from the Ministry of Science and ICT.
- KT offers free replacement of LTE or 5G phones, a 12,000 won monthly discount for 24 months, and a discount of up to 14,000 won per month.
Why 3G is being shut down
Fewer people use 3G, and they use less data. The network equipment is also old. Keeping an old network running costs money and uses radio frequencies that could be used better. The talks began in July, when the government asked carriers to invest in next-generation AI networks. In return, the carriers asked for tax breaks and a plan to retire old networks.
Why it matters
Shutting down 3G frees up network space for faster and safer LTE and 5G service. But the job is not finished. Many 3G lines are used by IoT devices, such as elevator emergency phones and remote meter readers. Some of these are linked to public safety. Moving them can take longer than moving regular phones, because carriers may not know exactly where each device is installed. The government says it will protect vulnerable users and existing customers first.
What to watch
- The Ministry of Science and ICT's decision on KT's final 3G shutdown date.
- How many IoT devices, such as elevator emergency phones, are moved to new networks before 3G is removed.
- Whether more customers switch to LTE or 5G with the carriers' support programs.
