K-Beauty Growth Continues… Yoon Sang-hyun of Kolmar: "100% YES!"

Policy1 min read

Yoon Sang-hyun, vice chairman of Korea Cosmetics (Kolmar Korea), says K-beauty will keep growing. He says the industry needs more investment in AI and healthcare technology to stay strong.

What happened

At the 'Amazon Beauty in Seoul 2026' event in Seoul on the 27th, Yoon said he is 100% sure K-beauty (Korean beauty products) will keep growing. He added that companies must keep investing in the whole K-beauty ecosystem, which means the network of makers, brands, and sellers, to stay competitive. He also said Kolmar is moving beyond research and manufacturing. It now wants to offer brand design, marketing, and sales support too.

Key numbers and facts

  • Dr. Melaxin, a Korean brand, earns 96% of its sales overseas.
  • Dr. Melaxin made 230 billion won (about 230 billion won in sales) last year.
  • This year, its sales have passed 200 billion won every quarter (every three months).
  • Yoon expects Dr. Melaxin to make at least 800 billion won this year.

Background

K-beauty means Korean skin care and makeup. Amazon is a large online store that helps Korean brands sell to customers in other countries. Kolmar makes cosmetics for other brands. Its new AI-based skin device checks the skin and sprays products onto it using a very fine mist.

Why it matters

This shows that Korean beauty brands can grow fast and sell well abroad. It also shows that big online platforms like Amazon play a key role. Yoon's view is that AI and health technology will be the next big source of growth for the industry.

What to watch

  • Whether Dr. Melaxin reaches its goal of at least 800 billion won in sales this year.
  • How Kolmar's partnership with Amazon grows and which new K-beauty brands it helps.
  • Whether Kolmar's AI skin device is sold widely.
  • How much investment Korean companies put into AI and healthcare in beauty.

Xbox Reportedly Ends Seven-Year Netflix Film and TV Rights Deal

Xbox reportedly abandoned a planned seven-year deal with Netflix to adapt its intellectual property for film and TV after talks stalled. Netflix had offered $500 million, Xbox countered with $800 million, and the negotiations collapsed after Netflix's former chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, left the company earlier this month. Xbox has since turned to smaller, project-by-project deals with other partners, while Netflix has not commented.

Worms mate in man's eyes, get plucked out right before larvae burst out

After two months of eye discomfort, a 71-year-old South Korean crop farmer had 11 living worms removed from his eyes at an eye clinic, many of the females pregnant. Doctors identified them as Thelazia callipaeda nematodes, which primarily infest cats and dogs but can occasionally enter human eyes. According to a case report in the New England Journal of Medicine, the worms were extracted one by one with forceps after a topical numbing treatment.

Microsoft offers to buy out a quarter of its workforce

Microsoft said on Monday it will offer voluntary buyouts to eligible employees in select parts of the company, roughly 60,000 people or about a quarter of its global workforce, according to CNBC. The offer covers employees in the United States, India, Canada, and the United Kingdom at level 70 or below, and comes after an April voluntary retirement package and July Xbox layoffs of 3,200 employees. Microsoft gave no direct reason for the package, though it has spent several years managing costs amid AI infrastructure and data-center investment.

The NBA’s response to gambling scandals is to add more gambling partnerships

The NBA announced new "preferred" prediction market deals with Kalshi and Polymarket, a memorandum of understanding with the US CFTC, and an expansion of its DraftKings deal to include prediction markets. The moves come as the league faces gambling scandals, including Jontay Porter's guilty plea, and as prediction markets face insider trading concerns and state lawsuits. The league says its new integrity framework includes limits on "permissible markets" and information-sharing on suspicious trades.
