[Interview] CGN TV Director Shin Yun-jae: "We Changed the Storage Method First for Broadcast Assets That Cannot Be Erased"
Software2 min read
CGN TV, a Christian broadcaster in Korea, rebuilt its video archive system. It moved old TV footage from disk-only storage to a mix of disk, object storage and tape, and it did this without stopping its broadcasts.
What happened
CGN TV became the first company in Korea to adopt Quantum's ActiveScale Cold Storage (ASCS). It changed its archive from disks only to a three-layer system: disks, object storage and a tape library. The team finished setting up the hardware in October 2025 and moved about 3 petabytes (PB) of broadcast files. The new archive has been running since April this year.
Key numbers and facts
- About 3 PB of broadcast content was moved to the new system.
- The old system had a 2.8 PB main storage and a backup storage of the same size.
- The new setup adds a 200 TB object storage unit (Quantum ActiveScale P200).
- The tape library holds 3.5 PB using LTO-9 tape, and can grow to 36 PB.
Why the old system was a problem
CGN makes worship services, sermons, documentaries and education shows. These videos are kept for many years so they can be reused, re-edited and broadcast again. As the files grew, the team had to add both the main and backup disks at the same time. This raised costs, power use, space needs and the work of replacing equipment. The director, Shin Yoon-jae, said the team needed a safer and cheaper way to keep long-term videos.
Why it matters
Broadcasters across the world face the same problem: their video libraries keep growing. CGN's move shows that a mix of disk, object storage and tape can keep old videos easy to reach while lowering cost. The team also kept its existing content management system and moved the data without stopping broadcasts or losing files. That makes this a useful example for other broadcasters.
What to watch next
- CGN plans to expand the system with AI-based video search, so staff can find clips by what they show, not only by file name or date.
- Whether the new archive keeps working well as the video library grows over the next few years.
- How much the system really lowers the total cost of ownership over time.
