Guardian Robot Can Lift Cars and Disarm Attackers

Robotics2 min read

Unitree Robotics, a Chinese robot company, has shown a new humanoid guard robot called H2-X. A promotional video shows it disarming an attacker, opening a car, and lifting a vehicle to rescue a trapped person.

A new rescue and guard robot

Unitree Robotics, based in Hangzhou in China's Zhejiang province, unveiled the H2-X on October 21. It is a humanoid robot, meaning it has a human-like shape. The company built it for emergencies, such as stopping an armed attacker or saving people in danger. In the promo video, the robot knocks down an intruder holding a knife, breaks open a car door, lifts a car to free a trapped victim, and pulls a pedestrian out of the way of an oncoming vehicle.

Key facts and numbers

  • The H2-X is based on Unitree's existing H2 humanoid robot.
  • The H2 is about 1.8 meters tall and weighs 70 kg.
  • An earlier version had 31 degrees of freedom and a maximum joint torque of 360 newton-meters at the leg joints.
  • The new model can stand for about 8 hours. The company gave no other battery or power details.
  • Unitree says people should keep at least 2 to 3 meters away from the robot.

What the key terms mean

A degree of freedom is one independent way a robot part can move. Many moves together let a humanoid walk, turn, balance, and grip objects. Joint torque is the twisting force a joint motor can produce. However, peak torque alone does not show how much weight a robot can lift or carry in real conditions.

Why it matters

A robot that works around people must do more than be strong. It must sense danger, understand a changing scene, move safely, and avoid causing more harm. Unitree has not explained how H2-X detects people, decides what is dangerous, or chooses its actions. It also has not said whether the robot is remote-controlled, pre-programmed, or fully automatic. The company has not shared a release date, price, or target customers. Its shares are also down about 39% from their level at the August listing on Shanghai's STAR Market.

What to watch

  • Whether Unitree releases full technical specifications for H2-X.
  • How the robot senses threats and makes decisions on its own, or whether people control it.
  • The release date, price, and who will buy it.
  • Battery life and power use during hard tasks.
  • Whether the company can show real results outside of promotional videos.
