Could potential AI clones of GTA VI force a quicker official port?
Software1 min read
A former Rockstar tech director thinks fans making AI-assisted PC versions of GTA VI could push Rockstar to release the official PC version sooner. The story looks at the long, tense history between Rockstar's PC and console releases.
A possible AI shortcut for PC players
Fans are trying to run the console version of GTA VI on a PC using Nvidia's DLSS technology. Some people expect an AI-assisted decompilation port, which means a version of the game rebuilt for PC from its original code, to appear soon. A former Rockstar tech director, Obbe Vermeij, says this threat could make Rockstar work faster on the official PC release.
An old split between PC and console
Vermeij worked at Rockstar until 2009. He said PC artists were angry when the PlayStation version of the first top-down Grand Theft Auto cut its 256-color textures down to 16 colors. He said PC came first back then, even though PlayStation versions sold much better. Those sales pushed Rockstar toward consoles, and its PC ports often arrived many months or years late.
Why it matters
Many game companies now treat PC as just as important as consoles, and the line between the two has blurred. Rockstar has kept its slower approach. If fan-made ports become a real option, the company may face pressure to release its official PC version earlier.
