Anthropic just launched tools to show companies what their AI spending is buying

AI2 min read

Anthropic, the maker of the AI model Claude, has launched new reporting tools. They help big companies see what their AI spending is buying. The move comes as its AI coding tool, Claude Code, is growing fast.

What happened

Anthropic announced a new set of reporting tools for its business customers. Managers can pick a date range and see what a team produced, how much it cost, and where the team's work got stuck. The reports use internal data and employee surveys. Anthropic also made pooled group budgets, so teams can manage how they spend on AI tokens. A token is a small chunk of text that an AI model reads or writes, and companies pay for them.

Key numbers

  • Anthropic recorded an operating profit in the second quarter.
  • Net revenue retention was 900%. This means spending from the same customers grew about nine times over one year.
  • Jellyfish, a company that makes tools for software developers, studied 276,000 of its customers.
  • Claude Code and other Anthropic-based tools wrote nearly a third of all proposed code changes sent for review.
  • Spending on these tools grew 10 times since the start of the year. They now make up about 2% of total engineering cost.

Why companies are asking questions

Many companies are now using AI tools. Yet most Fortune 500 companies, which are the 500 biggest U.S. companies, are not seeing major gains yet. Leaders want to know if the money is worth it. Jellyfish's chief scientist said that 10 times growth is something most finance chiefs did not plan for.

Why it matters

Companies that spend a lot on AI want proof that it pays off. Anthropic's new tools try to show that value and suggest how to get more from it. They also make it harder for customers to leave. Once a team has set up its work around one tool, switching to a rival takes a lot of effort.

What to watch

  • Whether customers use the reports to prove a return on their AI spending.
  • How fast rivals such as OpenAI's Codex gain users, after the launch of OpenAI's Astra model.
  • Whether pooled budgets help teams control token costs.

Disillusioned by Rushed AI Adoption

Many companies worldwide are struggling to clean up the mess caused by rushing to adopt AI tools that are not yet stable, leading to lost employee time, information leaks and higher costs. Reuters reported that Meta paused plans to cut staff and expand AI use because employees spent too much time fixing technical and security errors. Business Insider reported that Walmart store and warehouse workers faced unreasonable demands, system errors and false alerts from AI tools used for task allocation, scheduling and performance tracking.

Anthropic engineer declares the coding interview dead

Anthropic engineering manager Felix Rieseberg says he has stopped using traditional coding interviews for his team, arguing that Claude now outperforms candidates on such tests. Jaana Dogan, a principal engineer at Google, expressed a similar view, while labor economist Nicole Bachaud said the broader tech industry is not yet abandoning skills assessments.

Amazon tells tokenmaxxing devs to slow their AI roll

Amazon has told its engineers to maximize value rather than token usage, citing rising AI costs and complexity. In a note from VP and distinguished engineer Terk Terkowitz, the company said AI input metrics are flawed and can drive higher costs and complexity if used as targets. Amazon says engineers should focus on delivering useful software and results for customers and the business.
