AlpineBSD announced – an AI-free FOSS OS

Software1 min read

AlpineBSD is a new, very early free and open source operating system (OS). It combines the NetBSD kernel with a user space inspired by Alpine Linux, and its main goal is to avoid AI-generated code.

A new OS that says no to AI-made code

AlpineBSD is so new that it barely exists yet. There are no install disks yet, though you can set it up by hand. Its project rules say that any software with parts made by a generative AI tool, such as a large language model (LLM), counts as "tainted" and should be avoided as much as possible.

Why NetBSD matters here

AlpineBSD uses the kernel (the core part that runs the computer) of NetBSD, a system that has been run by its own community since 1993. In 2024, NetBSD also said that code made by an LLM is presumed to be tainted. Linux, the more common system, is not against AI. This made NetBSD more popular, with more donations and more interest.

Key facts

  • AlpineBSD was announced on 30 October 2026.
  • NetBSD has been a community project since 1993.
  • The article's author tried NetBSD 11 and could not get the CDE desktop to start.
  • AlpineBSD's code is hosted on Sourcehut, under the account of Drew DeVault.

Why it matters

Most people use Linux, and NetBSD can feel very different. Installing software is harder, and some steps are not clear. AlpineBSD shows that some developers want operating systems that avoid AI tools completely, which is a clear stand in a fast-changing tech world.

What to watch

  • Whether AlpineBSD releases install disks.
  • How strictly the project keeps its no-AI rule.
  • Whether NetBSD's donations and interest keep growing.
  • Whether AlpineBSD becomes easier to install than NetBSD.

Farm PC 'maintained' by a 14-year-old dumped support chap in a steaming pile of tech mess

In this On Call column, a support technician named Jason describes being called to a Yorkshire farm where a single Windows XP PC, running proprietary software, managed feeding, milk yields, pregnancy planning and government data submissions for a few hundred cattle. The system had no backups, no spare PC, and was maintained by the farmer's 14-year-old grandson, and it lacked a firewall. Jason installed one, made other fixes, got the system working, and was paid promptly, but never heard from the farm again.

Reddit to require login

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced that the platform will primarily become usable only with a login, ending nearly two decades of access without an account. The requirement will first be tested outside the US, though the exact locations are not yet clear. Huffman said the move would help personalize content, strengthen advertising and ease regulation, mainly by curbing scraping done by logged-out users.
