Google Adds Exception to Privacy Policy Allowing Gmail and Google Photos Data to Be Used for Ads; Opt-Out Methods Explained

PolicyFirst seen 185 points

Google updated its privacy policy. It now says that data from Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos can be used for personalized ads if you allow other Google services to use it. The article also explains how to stop Google Search from using data from these apps.

What changed

Google changed its privacy policy on October 16, 2026 (US time). Until now, Google said it would not show personalized ads based on content in Gmail, Google Drive or Google Photos. The new policy adds an exception. If you allow other Google services to use this data, Google can use it for ads. The Japanese version was updated on the same day.

Why this is linked to AI

The change is linked to a feature called Personal Intelligence. It lets Gemini and AI Mode in Google Search answer questions using information from Gmail, Google Photos and other apps. The feature is off by default, and you have to turn it on. It has been available in Japan for the Gemini app since April 14.

Key facts

  • The policy was updated on October 16, 2026 (US time).
  • Personal Intelligence came to Japan on April 14 for the Gemini app.
  • The feature is opt-in. It is off by default.
  • Google says ads will not be based directly on your Gmail inbox or Photos library.
  • Google still will not show ads based on sensitive topics such as race, religion, sexual orientation or health.

Why it matters

Many people trust that private emails and photos will not be used for ads. This change means that such data can still affect ads, through summaries and hints that Google Search gets from connected apps. Google also says these summaries may be used to train AI models, and some may be checked by human reviewers.

How to limit it

  • Go to Google Account, then Data & privacy, then Personalization settings under Customization and activity.
  • Open Manage personalized recommendations for Search, then Connected content apps under Additional personal intelligence.
  • Disconnect Google Workspace and Google Photos.
  • Note: disconnecting does not delete data already saved in your Search history. That data may still be used to improve products, including AI training.
