SpaceX could buy Boost Mobile as part of its big mobile carrier plans

Policy1 min read

SpaceX, Elon Musk's rocket and satellite company, has talked about a deal with Boost Mobile, a low-cost phone carrier. The deal could help SpaceX launch its own mobile phone service.

What happened

According to a report from The Washington Post, SpaceX has discussed a deal with Boost Mobile. The deal could let SpaceX buy Boost Mobile or use its network. SpaceX wants to make its Starlink service a big mobile carrier. Musk talked about the idea with Charlie Ergen, the chairman of Boost Mobile's parent company, EchoStar, last month. Neither SpaceX nor Boost Mobile had answered a request for comment from The Verge.

Why Boost Mobile matters

Boost Mobile does not have its own cell towers. Its network runs on T-Mobile and AT&T. So SpaceX may need permission from those two companies to use Boost's service. SpaceX is also building its phone plans in other ways. It bought wireless spectrum licenses (rights to use certain radio signals) from EchoStar last year. It also bought low-band spectrum, which is a type of signal that can reach inside buildings more easily.

Key facts

  • SpaceX bought wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar last year.
  • Bloomberg reported that SpaceX is in talks to get access to at least 80,000 cell sites in the US.
  • Boost Mobile's network is powered by T-Mobile and AT&T.
  • Musk talked with Charlie Ergen about the deal last month.

Why it matters

If the deal happens, SpaceX could become a real phone company, not just a satellite company. That could mean more competition for big carriers. It also shows how SpaceX plans to combine its satellites with cell towers on the ground.

What to watch

  • Whether SpaceX buys Boost Mobile or only uses its network.
  • Whether T-Mobile and AT&T give SpaceX permission.
  • Whether SpaceX gets access to the cell sites it is seeking in the US.
  • How and when Starlink Mobile service launches.

Microsoft's moolah mountain is more massive than ever. It just doesn't want the people who built it

Microsoft reported strong fiscal 2026 results, with Azure up over 40 percent, 30 million paid Copilot seats, and $10.2 billion returned to shareholders. Despite this, the company is inviting about 60,000 employees to consider voluntary redundancy, while analysts noted capital expenditure lagged expectations and the company may move into negative free cash flow in 2028. The column argues that the cuts are tied to funding AI infrastructure through borrowing.
