Samsung Lowers Next-Year OLED Galaxy A Shipment Target from 120 Million to 100 Million, a 20 Million Unit Cut

Devices2 min read

Samsung Electronics has reportedly cut its 2027 shipment target for mid-range Galaxy A phones with OLED screens from 120 million to 100 million units. The main reason is higher memory chip prices, which are making cheap phones harder to sell.

What happened

Samsung has tentatively set a target of 100 million OLED Galaxy A phones for next year. In late September, it had shared a target of 120 million with its suppliers. The new number is 20 million lower, and it is also 10 million below this year's expected 110 million.

Key numbers

  • Old 2027 target for OLED Galaxy A phones: 120 million units
  • New tentative target: 100 million units
  • This year's expected OLED Galaxy A shipments: 110 million units
  • The A1 line makes up more than half of the OLED Galaxy A volume
  • Galaxy A prices rose by more than 100,000 won (about 10 man-won) compared with the previous model this year

Why the cut is happening

Memory chips are a key part of every phone. When their prices jump, phone makers pay more to build each device. Samsung's Galaxy A is a cheaper phone line, so higher costs make it harder to keep prices low and sales strong. Other costs, such as glass fiber used in circuit boards, have also gone up and are harder to get. Samsung's phones do not sell well in the quiet months of Q2 and Q4, and it still seems to have too much stock.

Why it matters

A lower Galaxy A target points to weaker demand for cheap phones, and it may also lower Samsung's total phone shipment goal for next year. Samsung had planned to ship more than 250 million phones in 2027, but the plan is reportedly being revised down, possibly by 20 million or more. The company is also losing money on its phone business, and selling more phones may make profits worse, not better.

What to watch

  • Whether Samsung officially confirms the 100 million target
  • How much Samsung cuts its total 2027 phone shipment plan
  • Whether memory chip prices keep rising next year, as many expect
  • How the mobile division's loss changes in the coming quarters

Scott Walker’s The Drift will get under your skin

Terrence O'Brien, The Verge's weekend editor, reviews Scott Walker's 2006 album The Drift as one of the most genuinely terrifying Spooky Season records. He describes its dark lyrics on death, disease, and tragedy and its unsettling experimental soundscape. The review argues the album is challenging but rewarding, and that it makes the skin crawl rather than offering shivers.

Mobile Coverage Costs in Mountainous Areas Are Double Those in the Lowlands

Viettel Sơn La says building mobile infrastructure in the province's mountainous areas costs about 100% more than in the lowlands, due to rugged terrain, scattered populations and limited transport, power and transmission. The company plans 246 new BTS base stations in 2026 and aims to cover 100% of signal dead zones in the province this month, and has asked the Ministry of Science and Technology to allow use of the public telecom fund.
