Samsung Expands Board Reporting on CEO Succession Candidates to Affiliates
Policy1 min read
Samsung Group plans to expand a yearly board report on its CEO succession candidates to more of its affiliates. The move is meant to keep leadership changes smooth and improve how the company is governed.
What happened
Samsung Group is extending a practice to more of its companies. Each year, the boards of these companies will review a report on who could take over as CEO. Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung SDI are expected to put this on the agenda at board meetings held before their third-quarter earnings announcements. Samsung Electronics and Samsung C&T have done this since 2022. Financial affiliates such as Samsung Life and Samsung Card already report on CEO candidates to their boards.
Key facts
- Samsung Electronics and Samsung C&T have reported to their boards once a year since 2022.
- Samsung Electronics discussed the report at its board meeting on October 30 last year.
- Samsung Life and Samsung Card report on CEO candidate management and succession plan checks.
- Samsung's executive reshuffle for its affiliates is expected in the middle or late part of next month.
Why boards check CEO succession
A succession plan is a plan for who will take over a top job. If a company has no ready replacement, the business can stall when a CEO leaves. Regular board reviews help make sure a backup is always ready.
Why it matters
Analysts say this step can reduce gaps in management when a CEO changes and help keep business running smoothly. Regular checks by the board may also improve corporate governance, which means how a company is controlled and held accountable.
