Qualcomm is betting big on data centers as smartphone sales sink

Chips1 min read

Qualcomm, a maker of phone chips, says smartphone sales are falling fast. So it is betting on AI data centers to grow its business. The company made this plan clear on its latest earnings call.

What happened

Smartphone sales dropped by about 20 percent compared to 2025. During its Q4 2026 earnings call, Qualcomm explained how it plans to grow in AI data centers. It has partnerships with companies like Amazon and Meta, which were announced earlier this year. The company expects its data center business to grow quickly.

Key numbers

  • Qualcomm's total revenue for 2026 was $10.4 billion.
  • Data center revenue is expected to be about $650 million in the first quarter of 2027.
  • The company expects data center revenue to reach $5 billion by the end of 2027.
  • By 2029, data center revenue is expected to reach $15 billion.
  • Qualcomm expects data centers to eventually make up around 30 percent of its business.

Why the switch

Data centers are large buildings full of computers that run websites, apps, and AI tools. Companies that make chips for these buildings can earn a lot of money as AI use grows. AMD, another chip company, expects over 80 percent of its revenue to come from data centers in the future. That shows how big this market is for chip makers.

Why it matters

Phone sales are falling, so Qualcomm needs new ways to earn money. If its data center plan works, it could change the company a lot. The plan also shows that many companies want to buy AI chips. There seems to be enough demand for many chip makers.

What to watch

  • Whether Qualcomm reaches its goal of $5 billion in data center revenue by the end of 2027.
  • How its partnerships with Amazon and Meta grow over time.
  • Whether smartphone sales keep falling in the coming months.

Nintendo's biggest ROM chip supplier is bowing out of the business

Macronix, Nintendo's main memory chip supplier for physical game cartridges, said in its third-quarter earnings report that its ROM chip production "has reached its end" and that it will gradually exit the game industry. The company said ROM output has fallen 39 percent over the past year and now makes up just 5 percent of its business, as AI-driven demand pushes wafer capacity toward more profitable NOR, NAND, and eMMC chips.

Chip manufacturing: EU invests hundreds of millions in chip design platform

The European Union will invest €525 million to support a new generation of European chip design companies, as announced by Henna Virkkunen at the launch of the European Chip Design Platform. European firms currently generate less than 1% of global chip design revenue, and the platform will offer design tools, support services, IP building blocks, manufacturing access and grants of up to €16 million for advanced start-ups. The initiative is a key part of the EU Chips Act, which aims to strengthen Europe's semiconductor ecosystem and reduce dependence on the US and China.

Bare metal boom: On-prem server sales for HPC and AI up 20% this year

Hyperion Research says on-premises HPC and AI-for-Science server revenue reached $16.5 billion in the first half of 2026, up 19.9 percent, while unit shipments rose only 4.4 percent. The gap reflects higher system prices driven by costly GPUs and accelerators and higher memory costs. Dell has overtaken HPE as the largest HPC vendor by server revenue, with a 24 percent share to HPE's 21 percent.

AMD on track to overtake Intel as biggest x86 outfit

AMD has forecast higher revenue than Intel for its next quarter, which could make it the largest vendor whose main product is x86 processors for the first time. Its Q3 2026 revenue rose 45 percent year-over-year to $13.4 billion, led by a 97 percent jump in Data Center segment revenue to $8.5 billion. CEO Lisa Su said the company's supply chain can meet expected demand in 2027.
