ProSiebenSat.1 to Discontinue Teletext in Early 2027

Devices1 min read

ProSiebenSat.1, a German TV group, will shut down its teletext (a text-based info service on TV) in early 2027. Few viewers use it, and the group's streaming site Joyn already gives news instead.

The TV group is ending teletext

ProSiebenSat.1 will stop its teletext pages in early 2027. This affects Sat.1, ProSieben, Kabel Eins, Sixx, Sat.1 Gold, ProSieben Maxx and Kabel Eins Doku. The channels told viewers about the change on the first teletext page. A spokesperson said hardly anyone uses teletext anymore.

Teletext was already cut back

In early 2025, ProSiebenSat.1 already reduced its teletext a lot. Since then, it has shown only TV schedules. Subtitles will no longer come through teletext. Instead, viewers will turn them on in the TV or receiver settings. The company says the subtitles are not going away; only the way to reach them is changing.

Key facts

  • Seven channels are affected, including Sat.1 and ProSieben.
  • The shutdown is planned for early 2027.
  • Since early 2025, teletext has shown only TV programme information.
  • On page 111, news searches now lead to Joyn's news page.
  • Teletext started in Germany in 1980, when ARD and ZDF launched a shared service.

Other broadcasters are cutting back too

ZDF has removed sports news and stock prices from its teletext. Several regional ARD channels no longer make their own pages and use the shared ARD teletext instead. Teletext began as a way to send text along with the TV picture. The BBC in Britain started the idea, in part to bring subtitles to deaf viewers.

Why it matters

Teletext is a part of TV history that is slowly disappearing. For viewers who still use it, especially older people, this means they must switch to apps, websites or TV menus. Moving subtitles to TV settings may be easier for some people, but it also depends on newer equipment.

They also cover how AI investment is so far benefiting mainly the seven largest US tech companies, while Microsoft offers about 60,000 employees a voluntary severance package. The show also addresses why EU member states reject a technical solution for centrally managing cookie consent instead of clicking banners on each website.
