Playstation and Spider-Man performance see Sony profits surge

Devices1 min read

Sony reported a big jump in profit for the three months ending in September. The gains came mostly from its PlayStation games and the hit movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Sony's profits rise sharply

Sony's net profit (the money left after all costs are paid) reached 449.60 billion yen, about $2.84 billion. That is 44 percent more than the same period last year. PlayStation and the Spider-Man movie helped the most.

Key numbers

  • Sony net profit: 449.60 billion yen (about $2.84 billion), up 44% from 311.4 billion yen a year earlier.
  • Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $2.52 billion at the global box office, making it the third-highest grossing movie ever.
  • Sony Pictures Entertainment earned $581 million, up 527% from $93 million a year earlier.
  • PlayStation 5 sales fell to 2.6 million units, down from 4 million in the same quarter of 2025.
  • Marvel's Wolverine, a Sony-only game, sold 2.4 million units. Its reported budget was $300 million.

Why the mixed picture?

Fewer people bought PlayStation 5 consoles (the game machines). But game sales grew, both for digital downloads and physical discs. This happened even though players held a week-long blackout in August. They were protesting Sony's plan to stop making discs altogether.

Why it matters

Sony is doing well from both games and movies. Its strong movie results show that its films can still earn huge sums. Its game business still grows, even while console sales drop. Fans are also upset about the plan to end discs, so Sony must watch that carefully.

What to watch next

  • Progress on Sony's next PlayStation console. Sony CFO (chief financial officer, the person who manages money) Lin Tao says developers are making "solid progress" and the project is "progressing as scheduled."
  • Whether Sony keeps its plan to stop making discs, after the August player protest.
  • Whether PlayStation 5 sales keep falling in the coming months.

PC Games on Android: DroidDeck Turns Your Smartphone into a Steam Deck

The open-source DroidDeck launcher app turns a powerful Android smartphone into a mobile gaming device with a Steam Deck-style interface, without replacing or deeply modifying the operating system. It runs PC games via compatibility layers and requires an Adreno GPU, with support starting at Adreno 730 and the 800 series, while older 600-series chips work only experimentally. A physical controller attachment is recommended, since on-screen virtual buttons can hardly replace physical sticks and buttons.

ZTE denies smartphone sale rumors hinting at ByteDance involvement

ZTE has denied reports that it plans to move its smartphone business into a joint venture with a major internet company and state-owned investors. The company told The Paper the reports were seriously inconsistent with the facts and reserved the right to take legal action. Online speculation pointed to ByteDance, which already co-developed AI smartphones with ZTE, though the original media report did not name the internet company.

Not yet an "iPhone moment": Nothing's first AI-native product arrives in December

Nothing CEO Carl Pei has announced that the company will unveil a new product in December, its first AI-native device, and it will be neither new headphones nor a new phone. Pei says it is a tool meant to complete concrete tasks for users rather than a companion like Humane's failed AI Pin, and that it has no new screen and could not have been an app. He argues that the industry is chasing an "AI iPhone moment" prematurely, and that AI still lacks the context it needs.
