Pentagon IG refuses to investigate Starlink/Starshield slowdown in Ukraine
Policy1 min read
The Pentagon's inspector general will not investigate why Ukraine's military lost Starlink satellite internet on fast-moving drones. Senators from both parties had asked for the probe.
The Pentagon says no to a probe
The Pentagon's inspector general's office turned down a request from US senators. The senators wanted to know if new limits on Ukraine's use of SpaceX's satellite network were set by SpaceX or the US government. The inspector general said the Air Force and Space Force should answer these questions instead.
Key facts
- Military drones in Ukraine lost satellite connection when flying faster than 161 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour).
- The speed limit was lifted after about 10 days.
- Five Democratic and four Republican senators sent the letter on October 15.
- The inspector general is Platte Moring.
What is Starlink?
Starlink is a satellite internet service run by SpaceX. Starshield is a version made for the military. Ukraine uses both to keep its forces connected during the war with Russia.
Why this matters
The story raises questions about whether the US government or SpaceX cut off Ukraine's drones. CNN reported that the problems came right after the US threatened to hold back intelligence from Kyiv. They also came after Trump made a deal to buy Russian diesel and ease sanctions on Moscow. Nobody has yet given a clear answer.
What to watch
- Whether the Air Force or Space Force answers the senators' questions.
- Whether the Department of Defense says if it will investigate.
- Whether Congress takes further action to get answers.
