New MacBook Pro: Other Important Details
Devices1 min read
Apple's new MacBook Pro has a touch screen and a new OLED display, and it is due on November 6. This article looks at smaller changes beyond the big new features.
Thinner and lighter
Apple made the new MacBook Pro lighter and thinner. From the outside it looks almost the same as the old model. The 14-inch model with M5 Pro now weighs 1.38 kg, down from 1.6 kg. The 16-inch model with M5 Pro weighs 1.82 kg, down from 2.14 kg.
Key facts
- Weight drop: about 13.5 to 15 percent.
- Height drop: 3.2 percent on the 14-inch model and 4.8 percent on the 16-inch model.
- Battery: 72 watt-hours on the 14-inch model and 100 watt-hours on the 16-inch model.
- Web use: about 13 to 17 hours, according to Apple.
- Video streaming tests: between 20 and 24 hours.
Touch and the new screen
The new laptop is the first Mac with a touch screen. Apple changed macOS so that buttons get bigger and menus get more space when you touch them. You can also turn touch off completely. Apple also added swipe gestures from the iPhone to open Siri or Spotlight, the search tool.
Why it matters
Battery life did not get worse, even with the touch screen and the new OLED display. The glowing Apple logo is back, and the Dynamic Island from the iPhone now appears on a Mac for the first time. Face ID is still missing, so the laptop keeps the Touch ID button.
