Khosla Ventures doubles down on Even Healthcare to challenge India’s hospital economics
Policy1 min read
Indian healthcare startup Even Healthcare raised $50 million from Khosla Ventures and others. It plans to build and run its own hospitals that pay doctors salaries instead of rewarding extra tests and surgeries.
What happened
Even Healthcare, a startup in India, raised $50 million in a new funding round led by Khosla Ventures, a Silicon Valley investment firm. Alpha Wave also joined the round. The company says its value is now $300 million, three times what it was 18 months ago. Even is moving to build and run its own hospitals, so it can control patient care and costs more closely.
Key numbers
- $50 million raised in the new Series B round
- $300 million company value, triple its value 18 months ago
- More than $120 million raised in total
- Two hospitals open in Bengaluru, both profitable before depreciation within a year of opening
- Five more hospitals planned in Bengaluru over the next six months
The problem Even wants to fix
In India, hospitals often make more money when patients get more tests, procedures, or longer stays. Some of these may not be needed. Even was started in 2021 to change this. At first it sent its members to partner hospitals. Its founders later found that patients were getting tests and surgeries they did not need, so Even decided to open its own hospitals.
Why it matters
This is a test of a new way to run healthcare. Even pays doctors fixed salaries, not bonuses for more procedures. It rewards doctors for better patient results instead. If this model works, it could change how hospitals earn money in India, which has more than a billion people, and possibly in other countries too.
What to watch
- Whether the five new Bengaluru hospitals open on time
- Whether Even's patient results stay strong as it grows
- Whether insurers agree to pay Even for hospital stays it helps prevent
- How the model performs outside Bengaluru and India
