Fuji TV to Use Generative AI in All Dramas by 2027; Up to 80% Labor Cut in Some Production Steps

AI2 min read

Fuji Television says it plans to let all of its dramas use generative AI (AI that creates images and text from prompts) by October 2027. Some film-making steps already cut work time by up to 80%.

What happened

On November 5, Fuji Television announced it will set up its system so that every drama it makes can use generative AI by October 2027. From the October 2026 season, it will pick at least one drama per season as an "AI Strong Slot" and use AI more in that show. Some video steps already took up to 80% less work time.

Key numbers and facts

  • Target: all Fuji TV dramas can use generative AI by October 2027
  • From the October 2026 season: at least 1 drama per season is an "AI Strong Slot"
  • Up to 70% to 80% less work time in some video steps, compared with old methods
  • The AI Sandbox test lab started running in September, after the AI Center was set up in July
  • Fuji TV says the cut only applies to certain steps. It does not show the total cost or work cut for a whole show.

How the tests work

Fuji TV tested AI at a test lab called AI Sandbox, built at a studio on the Wangan coast. Drama staff, technical staff, and an AI company called ANDENT worked together on real drama shoots. In the hit show Kyumei Byoto 24-ji, AI was used to show the director's ideas before filming. It also made hospital scenes and accident scenes that are hard to film for real. For one explosion scene, AI made a fake aerial view and added smoke.

Why it matters

This shows a major TV company moving AI from small tests into everyday drama work. AI can make scenes that are hard to shoot because of place, weather, law, or safety. Fuji TV says it will mix AI with normal visual effects rather than make every shot with AI. It also plans to spread the work to its group companies and aims to have AI skills across the whole group by fiscal 2029.

What to watch

  • Whether the AI Strong Slot dramas show the results Fuji TV expects
  • How much of the work cut holds up across full shows, not just single steps
  • How the group companies use AI by fiscal 2029
  • How viewers and creators react to AI-made scenes

These include not using non-disclosure agreements with public officials, paying the full cost of the electricity and infrastructure it needs, and publishing expected jobs and hiring reports. OpenAI also said future "compute campuses" it owns and operates will have a "local compact" reflecting local priorities.

Perplexity launches its own take on AI agents for work

Perplexity has launched "Teammates," always-on AI agents for work that can take on multiple roles within a workspace and draw on existing projects, skills, and memory from Perplexity tools. Teammates integrate with Perplexity Computer, which deploys agents on a user's device, and each Teammate gets its own thread that can be tracked in the Perplexity app or accessed in Slack. The feature requires Perplexity's $200-per-month Max plan.
