FPT Begins Trial Operations of Chip Plant in Bac Ninh

Chips2 min read

FPT, a Vietnamese technology company, has started test runs of a new factory in Bac Ninh that tests and packages computer chips. The factory is part of FPT's plan to take a bigger role in the global chip supply chain.

What happened

FPT has begun trial operations at a chip testing and packaging factory in Bac Ninh. The plant has 6 production lines and can handle up to 300 million chips a year. It sits on 1,600 square meters in the Yen Phong II-C industrial park. The company says the plant will test large volumes of chips for businesses.

Key numbers and facts

  • Up to 300 million chips per year during the trial phase
  • 6 production lines
  • 1,600 square meters of floor space
  • The clean room for testing is Class 10,000 (ISO Class 7)
  • The factory follows ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 45001 (workplace safety)

How the factory works

Chip testing checks whether a chip works and can handle real use. An automatic test machine, called an ATE Tester, checks the chip's functions. A handler machine places each chip into the test spot, then sorts it as pass or fail. The company also runs tests for heat, temperature changes and humidity to check how long chips last. Static electricity control protects chips from damage. FPT says it has its own engineers write test programs for each chip type, and it is building AI tools to automate that work.

Why it matters

Vietnam wants to play a bigger part in the chip industry, not just assembly. Testing and packaging are key steps that add value. FPT also has experienced staff, including people who once worked at Intel Vietnam. The factory will train students too, which may help Vietnam grow its chip workforce. The company plans its first testing order for a partner in South Korea, and it has already shipped a batch of its own power chips to a partner in Japan.

What to watch

  • The first testing order for a South Korean partner
  • The start of a pilot program with FPT Polytechnic students from December
  • Plans to add reliability testing and calibration services later
  • Plans to develop chip packaging technology

Rep. Im Moon-young urges AMD to set up AI research center in Gwangju, citing five location strengths

Democratic Party lawmaker Im Moon-young met AMD Senior Vice President Keith Strier in Seoul to again propose a Center of Excellence (CoE) in Gwangju, leveraging the city's AI and semiconductor infrastructure. He cited five strengths: a planned domestic NPU-based AI data center, R&D special zone investment support, a planned semiconductor production facility, next-generation optical semiconductor research capability, and proximity to the Seoul metropolitan area. The meeting follows Im's earlier proposal to AMD CEO Lisa Su, and he pledged National Assembly support if the center is established.

Toyota shows off SoC that stores model weights and its OS on integrated memory

Toyota major shareholder AISIN has developed a system-on-chip built on a 16nm FinFET process with an Arm Cortex-A53 dual-core CPU and Arm Mali-G31 GPU, using built-in STT-MRAM to store AI model weights and an operating system. AISIN and Tohoku University say the chip reaches kernel startup in 65.7 milliseconds, 38 times faster than using external memory, and can run the Tiny YOLOv3 object detection algorithm. AISIN has not said if or when the chip will enter production.

Marvell wants to be a copper topper, bets $115B on photonics leader to push optical networking

Marvell Technology plans to acquire photonics company Lumentum in an all-stock deal valued at $115 billion, expected to close in the first half of 2028. The move aims to fill gaps in Marvell's photonics portfolio as AI infrastructure builders such as Nvidia and AMD pursue larger rack-scale systems that rely on optical interconnects. The article notes that copper reach falls sharply as per-lane speeds rise, while optics can cover kilometers and reduce rack power and cooling needs.

AI Chips Attract Chinese Synthetic Diamond Producers

Many Chinese synthetic diamond manufacturers are shifting toward AI chips and semiconductors in pursuit of higher profits than the jewelry market offers. Facing intense competition and price pressure, these producers, who account for about half of global supply, are using diamond for heat dissipation and other advanced applications. Analysts say diamond's far higher thermal conductivity than copper could make it valuable for cooling AI data-center hardware.
