Anthropic Renames Claude's "Max 20x" Plan to "Ultra," Removes 5-Hour Usage Limits at $200/Month

AI2 min read

Anthropic has renamed two of its paid Claude plans. The $200-a-month "Max 20x" plan is now called "Ultra," and verified users no longer face the 5-hour usage limit.

What happened

On October 30 (US time), Anthropic said on its official X account that it had renamed the Max plans for Claude, its AI assistant for individuals. The $100-a-month "Max 5x" is now just "Max." The $200-a-month "Max 20x" is now "Ultra." The prices stay the same, and current subscribers move to the new names without doing anything. At the same time, Ultra removed the 5-hour usage cap for verified accounts. Most existing subscribers got this change the same day.

Key numbers and facts

  • Max costs $100 a month and gives 5 times the usage of the Pro plan ($20 a month), with limits every 5 hours and every week.
  • Ultra costs $200 a month and gives 10 times the Pro usage per week. The old "20x" number measured 5-hour usage, so it cannot be compared directly with the new weekly 10x number.
  • Newer accounts keep a temporary limit until Anthropic checks them. Checks use account and payment history, and users get an email when the limit is lifted.
  • Both plans can use the "Fable" high-performance model for up to 50% of the weekly limit. They also get monthly API credits on Claude Platform: $100 for Max and $200 for Ultra.

Background

The Max plan launched on April 9, 2025. From the start, it had two levels: a $100 plan with 5 times the Pro usage, and a $200 plan with 20 times the Pro usage. The pricing page and app called them "Max 5x" and "Max 20x." The new names make the plan levels easier to tell apart.

Why it matters

The name change makes the plans simpler to understand. The removal of the 5-hour cap for the top plan means heavy users can work for longer without hitting a limit. Because verification is needed, some newer users will still have limits for now. Users who want to compare plans should read the weekly numbers carefully, since the old and new figures use different measures.

What to watch

  • Whether more newer accounts finish verification and lose their temporary limits.
  • How the weekly limits on Ultra work in daily use.
  • Whether Anthropic changes prices or limits for these plans later.

Wall Street is moving to guard against losses from massive AI investment as doubts grow over whether returns will meet expectations. According to the Wall Street Journal, individual investors and tech executives are using put options and credit default swaps (CDS) to prepare for asset price declines, and demand for hedging against falling GPU rental fees is also rising. Put options on CoreWeave have surged, with trading concentrated in 2028-expiry, $35-strike contracts, while CDS premiums for five major tech companies rose over the past month to their highest levels since 2021.

AI can make tech CEOs’ lives easier. What about everyone else?

Tech CEOs including Marissa Mayer, Sam Altman, and Mark Zuckerberg have faced criticism for comments praising AI's usefulness in personal life, such as parenting and relationships. TechCrunch's Amanda Silberling argues that the industry is pushing toward a future where basic human interaction is increasingly optimized out, and that AI executives may be too out of touch to build products for ordinary people.

Elon Musk: AI agents will hack systems to make money for themselves
