Alphabet's market value plunges by half a trillion dollars

AI2 min read

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, saw its stock value fall by about one eighth on Thursday. That is a drop of roughly half a trillion dollars, the biggest share price fall in the company's history, and it came after weak money numbers.

A huge drop in share price

Shares of Alphabet lost about 12.5 percent of their value on Thursday, with heavy trading. The company's market value fell by roughly 500 billion US dollars. This is the largest drop the company has ever had. Alphabet's own financial results caused the fall, not outside events.

Key numbers from the third quarter

  • Sales rose by about 25 percent compared with a year earlier.
  • Operating profit (profit from the main business) rose by 30 percent.
  • Net profit (profit left after all costs and taxes) fell by almost 25 percent.
  • Operating cash flow (cash the business makes from daily work) fell by about 12.5 percent to 42.3 billion US dollars.
  • Spending on equipment reached 51.3 billion US dollars, more than double the same quarter last year.

Why the money is going out

Alphabet is spending huge sums on AI data centers. These are large buildings full of computers that run AI programs. Spending on equipment and prepayments is much higher than the cash coming in. To pay for this, Alphabet borrowed 29 billion US dollars and sold new shares. It also has losses on shares and bonds it holds, and it has to pay more interest on its debt.

Why it matters

When a company spends more cash than it earns, investors start to worry. New shares also make each existing share own a smaller part of the company. Management plans to sell even more shares, about 27.6 billion US dollars, and it expects AI costs to keep rising. So investors may stay cautious for a while.

What to watch

  • How much more money Alphabet spends on AI data centers in the current quarter.
  • Whether the planned sale of 27.6 billion US dollars in new shares goes ahead.
  • Whether free cash flow (cash left after big investments) becomes more negative again.
  • How much interest costs keep growing.

OpenAI Revises "Model Spec" AI Behavior Guidelines, Specifying Use of Memory and Human Oversight

OpenAI published a revised version of Model Spec, the public document defining how its AI models should behave, on October 29 local time. The new version is organized around five values, adds rules on handling context such as conversation history and memory and on cooperating with human oversight, and removes most of the detailed guidelines on ChatGPT's personality and writing style. OpenAI says the Model Spec describes intended behavior and that current models do not yet fully reflect it.

The feature is rolling out gradually to all Cooking subscribers on iOS, with broader availability planned "soon," and customized recipes remain private.
