Software1 min read

The Korea Information Science Society held the 20th Science and Technology Innovation Awards ceremony in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do. Nineteen AI and technology projects from companies and groups won prizes.

What happened

On May 27, the Korea Information Science Society held the '20th Science and Technology Innovation Awards' in Gwacheon. The awards honor companies, public bodies, and groups that used science, technology, and artificial intelligence (AI) to bring change to industry and society. Nineteen projects were chosen as winners from entries across three areas.

Key numbers and facts

  • 93 projects entered across 3 areas and 12 fields.
  • 19 projects won awards.
  • The Speaker of the National Assembly's prize went to ELBio Sciences for basic science research in biology.
  • Three projects won the top overall prize from the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT: MegazoneSoft, iTrive and Korea Research International, and Korea Tourism Organization with Yoon Communications.
  • Six Gold awards and two Silver awards were also given. About 130 guests and winners attended.

Background

The awards are co-hosted by the Korea Information Science Society and The Electronic Times. Digital Insight, the Korea Certification Authority for Science and ICT, and the Korea Machine Vision Industry Association jointly ran the event. The entries were judged by a panel of experts.

Why it matters

The awards show how AI is being used in real businesses, government services, and daily life. A lawmaker said the benefits of national AI spending should reach small startups as well as large companies. The society's chair said that trust, safety, fairness, transparency, and digital inclusion should all be pursued together as technology spreads.

What to watch

  • Whether AI benefits reach small and new companies, not only big firms.
  • How the award-winning projects are used in daily life and public services.
  • How the society builds cooperation between industry, schools, and research groups.

AI slows growth for Infosys and keeps it afloat at the same time

Infosys reported 29 percent sequential growth in AI revenue, which now makes up 10.5 percent of its incoming cash, but customers expect lower prices for AI-assisted work and those savings are built into multi-year deals. The company cut its full-year revenue growth forecast to 1.0–2.0 percent from 1.5–3.0 percent, and its shares are down over 25 percent in the last twelve months. Analysts have reportedly downgraded the company.

AI-generated channel summaries will be published from November 16, and message text will be searchable starting in mid-December, with users able to opt out of having their posts shown. The change has drawn privacy concerns, as the move applies to servers with 1,000+ members that are discoverable without invitation.

Google begins certifying Registered App Stores for Android, but not in the US

Google has opened applications for its Registered App Stores program, which lets third-party app stores outside the US gain preferential treatment and one-click installs on Android, with rollout to some devices later this year. The program was originally Google's backup plan after losing the Epic Games antitrust case, and US users will instead access third-party stores through Google Play under a court order.
