Salesforce’s M&A spree continues with a reported $375M deal for defense tech startup Rune

AI1 min read

Salesforce has agreed to buy Rune Technologies, a startup that makes AI software for the U.S. military, in a deal reported at $375 million. The deal is another step in Salesforce's growing work in defense technology.

What happened

Salesforce agreed to acquire Rune Technologies for $375 million in cash and stock. Rune builds AI software that helps the U.S. military predict what supplies it will need and manage logistics, which means moving and tracking supplies, in the field. The report came from Resilience Media. Salesforce did not respond to a request for comment.

Key numbers

  • Deal value: reported at $375 million in cash and stock
  • Missionforce business growth: 80% year over year since it launched last year
  • Missionforce's 10-year contract with the U.S. Army: $5.6 billion
  • Rune's total funding raised since its founding in 2024: $30 million
  • Rune's last valuation: $127 million, in a Series A led by Human Capital last year

Background

Missionforce is Salesforce's business unit that serves national security and defense agencies. Rune's software is meant to help Missionforce go beyond office-style planning and support work on the battlefield. Salesforce has also been buying many companies this year. These include AI agent platform Fin (formerly Intercom) for $3.6 billion, Qualified for $1.2 billion, and Listen Labs.

Why it matters

This deal shows that a big software company is moving hard into defense technology. Military buyers are spending on AI tools, and Salesforce wants a bigger role there. For startups, it shows that defense software can attract large buyers. For the military, it could mean better tools for getting supplies to troops.

What to watch

  • Whether Salesforce confirms the $375 million price
  • How Rune's logistics data is added to Missionforce's products
  • Whether Missionforce keeps growing after the deal
  • Whether Salesforce buys more companies this year

Darkbloom, which allowed Mac users to rent out their GPUs for AI inference, warns of low payouts

Darkbloom, a distributed inference network from Seattle-based Eigen Labs, lets macOS users rent out their GPUs for AI model prompts routed through OpenRouter. Participants have reportedly earned only a few cents to a few dollars per day as token prices have fallen, with the median leaderboard earnings about $5.26 per day. Eigen Labs researcher Kydo said earnings have been low and are unlikely to recover soon, and the company is exploring other models and compute work.

Apple Intelligence is finally coming to China with iOS 27.3

Apple will launch Apple Intelligence in China with iOS 27.3, first in a beta set to launch on November 4th, with a full release scheduled for December. The launch does not include the new Siri AI; instead, it brings earlier features such as notification summaries, real-time translation, writing tools, visual intelligence, and object removal from photos. Apple also says it has worked with Alibaba to add support for its Qwen chatbot in some experiences.

The biggest names in AI are backing a new way to opt out of scraping

OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic say they will adopt a shared "policy token" standard, proposed by Anthropic's Kevin Kelley through the IETF, that lets publishers set AI training preferences once across multiple AI companies via robots.txt. Anthropic has already adopted the signal, Google and Microsoft plan to support it next year, and OpenAI says it will implement it in the "coming months." Microsoft will also offer more granular controls for opting out of AI training or AI grounding, and says websites will still appear in Bing search results regardless.

Zest’s new AI agent finds restaurants and books reservations over text

Zest, a restaurant discovery app launched earlier this year, has added a text-based AI "restaurant concierge" that makes personalized suggestions and can check availability and book tables through OpenTable, Resy, and SevenRooms. Users can also add the concierge to group chats to blend everyone's tastes, vote on options, and book for the group. The app learns tastes by linking to users' credit cards, using only food and drink transactions imported via Plaid.
