Nvidia Enters Qualcomm-Paved Path as Arm Windows PC Competition Heats Up

Chips1 min read

Nvidia has launched its "RTX Spark" platform for Windows PCs that use Arm chips. This ends about nine years in which Qualcomm was almost the only maker of such PCs.

What happened

Nvidia officially released RTX Spark, a platform for Windows PCs based on Arm chips. It released the product with PC makers such as Asus, MSI, Lenovo, Dell Technologies, and Microsoft on the 16th. Until now, Qualcomm had almost no competition in this market.

Key facts

  • Qualcomm has led Arm-based Windows PCs for about nine years, starting in 2017.
  • RTX Spark uses Nvidia's Blackwell GPU, which is already proven in PCs and servers.
  • Nvidia first said in June 2026, at Computex 2026, that real products would come out in the fall.
  • Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite was first released in June 2024.

How we got here

Microsoft tried Arm-based Windows with the Surface RT in 2012, but it failed because older x86 software did not run well on it. Later, Microsoft and Qualcomm worked together to fix software compatibility. Qualcomm's own Oryon CPU, used in the Snapdragon X Elite, made Arm PCs faster and better at saving battery. However, its graphics (GPU) was still weak, especially for games.

Why it matters

Nvidia brings strong graphics skills, which Qualcomm lacked. Microsoft gets more chip choices and better gaming on Arm Windows PCs. Arm, which designs the basic chip parts many companies use, may also gain. Qualcomm, however, has lost its position as the only choice and must now improve its graphics. Several key Qualcomm GPU and PC leaders have also moved to Intel, which makes the challenge harder.

What to watch

  • Whether RTX Spark PCs go on sale in the fall as Nvidia promised.
  • How well Nvidia's games features, such as DLSS, work on Windows Arm PCs.
  • How Qualcomm answers with faster graphics in its next chips.
  • Whether Intel and AMD bring their own new chips to defend the x86 PC market.
  • The legal fight between Arm and Qualcomm, which began in 2022.

China's Trade-offs in Producing Chips Without EUV

China can now produce advanced chips without EUV lithography, but faces cost, yield, and production-time hurdles. Domestic manufacturers rely mainly on DUV lithography, using multi-patterning techniques that add steps, masks, and error risks.
