Meta will end Quest 2 OS updates in 2027

Devices1 min read

Meta will stop making new operating system (OS) updates for its older Quest 2 and Quest Pro VR headsets. The last big update is planned for March 2027, and only security fixes will follow after that.

What happened

Meta said it will release the final OS update for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro by March 2027. That last update is called v213. After it, Meta will still send security patches and fixes for serious bugs until the end of 2027. Developers can also submit apps for these headsets until December 2027.

Key facts

  • Last OS update: v213, planned by March 2027
  • Security patches and critical bug fixes: through the end of 2027
  • App submissions for Quest 2 and Quest Pro: open through December 2027
  • Quest 2 launched in 2020; Quest Pro launched in 2022
  • Both devices were discontinued in 2024

Some background

An OS is the main software that runs a device, like Windows on a laptop. A VR headset is a face-worn device that shows you a virtual world. Meta is the company behind the Quest line. It has now named the Quest 3 and Quest 3S as the main devices for its VR players.

Why it matters

Owners of Quest 2 and Quest Pro will get fewer new features over time, though they will still get security protection for a while. Meta says apps built for Quest 3 will also work on its new VR Glasses, which are expected in spring 2027. This shows Meta is focusing on newer hardware.

What to watch

  • Whether Meta releases the v213 update by March 2027
  • How long security patches continue after that, through the end of 2027
  • The launch of Meta's new VR Glasses in spring 2027

Apple Watch’s AI features for rewinding and recapping conversations begin beta testing

Apple’s AI-powered “Audio Intelligence” for the Apple Watch has begun beta testing, initially for developers in the iOS 27.3 update, after being announced in September. Among its four opt-in features, Live Rewind lets users view and optionally save the last 15 seconds of speech as a text snippet, while Siri Recaps creates short summaries and bullet points of conversations without speaker identification, raw audio storage, or word-for-word transcription. Apple says Siri Recaps won’t record when headphones are playing music or using noise cancellation.

Screen defect may affect 'thousands of iPhone Duo' units

Apple has said a small number of iPhone Duo units are affected by screen cracking, but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who says he has directly verified many cases, believes the real figure could be in the thousands, including devices damaged during normal use. Reports suggest a faulty hinge component may be behind the problem, and Apple is directing affected users to AppleCare for repair or replacement at no extra cost.
