JoongAng Ilbo to Be Acquired by Dow–CJ Consortium in 520 Billion Won Deal
Policy1 min read
JoongAng Ilbo, a major Korean newspaper, will be bought by a group led by Dow Technology and CJ. The deal is worth 520 billion won and will be done by issuing new shares to the buyers.
What happened
The Dow-CJ group will sign a deal on the 5th to buy new shares of JoongAng Ilbo. The group will become the newspaper's biggest owner. Four companies in the group, Dow Technology, Saramin, CJ, and Shinsegae, each approved the deal at their board meetings. JoongAng Ilbo's board also approved it.
Key numbers
- Total deal size: 520 billion won
- Dow Technology: 36.5% of the new shares
- CJ: 35.7%
- Shinsegae: 14.1%
- Saramin: 13.7%
Why the sale is happening
In June, JoongAng Ilbo asked for a corporate restructuring process, called workout, because its parent group's affiliates had cash problems. As part of this process, the company has been looking for a new owner. The money from the new shares will go straight into the company. This should make its finances healthier and reduce its debt risk.
Why it matters
The deal includes promises meant to protect jobs and press freedom. The buyers will keep all employees, keep the current union agreement, and avoid forced layoffs. They also promised not to unfairly interfere with news, commentary, or editing. The company's CEO, Park Jang-hee, said the company will work hard to protect creditors and investors and return to normal business soon.
What to watch
- Whether the contract is signed on the 5th as planned
- How the new owners run the newspaper after the deal closes
- Whether the promises on jobs and editorial independence are kept
