Inside the Photography Lab of Oppo and Hasselblad

Devices1 min read

Oppo and camera maker Hasselblad run a shared photo lab in China. They test and tune the cameras on Oppo's high-end Find X phones, such as the Find X10 Pro Max.

A shared lab for better phone photos

Oppo and Hasselblad have a joint imaging lab at Oppo's headquarters in Shenzhen, China. Engineers there test how well the phone takes photos. They focus on colors, sharpness and zoom. Oppo showed the lab and the new Find X10 Pro Max on October 29.

Key facts

  • The Find X10 Pro Max is the first phone in the world with three main cameras that each use a 200-megapixel sensor.
  • The phone's zoom range runs from 0.5x to 9.9x.
  • The three main cameras use the same type of sensor: Isocell HPC 1/1.28" DeepPix.
  • The Hasselblad X2D II 100C, a professional camera that costs almost 8,000 USD without a lens, is used as a reference.

How the partnership started

Oppo began working with Hasselblad in 2021 to improve phone photos. The first phone with Hasselblad help was the Find X5 Pro. Over more than four years, the Find X line has become Oppo's top camera series. Hasselblad helped with color, pro shooting modes, AI image processing, and a retro mode called XPAN.

Why it matters

Phone cameras are now a major reason people buy a phone. This lab shows how two brands work together to make phone photos look more natural. Oppo says the goal is to bring Hasselblad's strengths in optics, camera hardware and image style to phones.

What to watch

  • Whether real photos taken on the Find X10 Pro Max match the lab tests.
  • How the color and zoom results compare with the Hasselblad camera.
  • Whether other phone makers add 200-megapixel sensors to all their main cameras.

Beyond screens: Mercedes-Benz's new holographic heads-up display

Mercedes-Benz is developing a holographic display as an alternative to ever-larger car screens. Unlike a traditional heads-up display that projects onto the windshield, it uses a projector and a transparent film laminated into the glass, with holographic optical elements that reflect the projector's light. The design keeps images visible in direct sunlight while hiding them from the driver's view, unlike current passenger-side screens that rely on driver-monitoring cameras or polarization.
