Space1 min read

The New 7 Wonders group has opened a global public vote to pick the best future-city projects around the world. The vote started at a switch-on event in New Clark City, Philippines, on World Cities Day.

What happened

On October 31, 2026, the New 7 Wonders group started a worldwide public vote for its '7 Wonders of Future Cities' campaign. The event was held in New Clark City, a city project in the Philippines that is one of the official campaign entries. At the event, the campaign website www.7wondersfc.com changed from an information page into a live voting platform. Jean-Paul de la Fuente, a director of New 7 Wonders and head of the campaign, led the switch-on.

Key facts

  • The voting period lasts one year.
  • The final seven cities and projects will be announced on October 31, 2027.
  • Earlier New 7 Wonders campaigns recorded more than 600 million votes in total.
  • Projects are judged on three main themes: Environment & Nature, Smart City, and Human-Centric development.

Background

New 7 Wonders is a global group known for choosing the New 7 Wonders of the World and the New 7 Wonders of Nature through public voting. This new campaign moves the focus from natural and historic wonders to places that are being built and changed for the future of people. Global Platform Limited, based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, runs the campaign as part of New 7 Wonders' global licensing and commercial work.

Why it matters

The campaign asks people all over the world to decide what a good future city looks like. It says a good city must balance care for the environment, new technology, and the needs and hopes of the people who live there. Because anyone can vote, the results may show which ideas about city life people value most.

What to watch

  • Which cities and projects gain the most votes over the next year.
  • The final list of seven future cities, due on October 31, 2027.
  • Whether more cities join the campaign as official entries.

Once again, NASA is asking for ideas to rescue Hubble from certain death

NASA has issued a Request For Information asking commercial companies for ideas to reboost, service, or safely deorbit the Hubble Space Telescope, which is losing altitude and could reenter the atmosphere in the early-to-mid-2030s. The agency wants a mission that boosts Hubble to at least 373 miles (600 km) without harming it, by 2032, with responses due November 30. NASA is not yet committing to buying such a mission.

Satlyt takes another step toward turning satellites into space data centers

Satlyt, founded in 2024 by Rama Afullo, reported a successful test of software that distributes computing tasks across computers in orbit, run with the University of Houston on a NASA-funded project. The simulated test used four computers, four users, and eight services, and it showed the software can generate task plans on orbital hardware. The company still needs to test under more workloads and connectivity conditions, and NASA has not selected the technology for any mission.

Rare meteorite from Mars gives us a view into its ancient crust

A team led by NASA JPL planetary scientist Yang Liu has shown that Teghaza 001, a Martian meteorite found in the Sahara Desert in Mali in 2022, formed at least 4.1 billion years ago. It is only the third genuinely ancient Martian meteorite known, after Allan Hills 84001 and Black Beauty. Liu says the impact process that launches rocks off Mars may filter out weak rocks, which could explain why old Martian rocks are rare on Earth.

Voyager 1 gives controllers the silent treatment

Voyager 1 went silent for a few days in October 2026, when NASA's Deep Space Network could not detect its signal on October 18 or 19. The signal returned on October 20, and engineers believe a group of thrusters went offline and their backups were activated, possibly because onboard computers entered a safe mode. The team is still working to understand the cause as the spacecraft approaches its 50th anniversary next year.
