Akai is embracing vibe-coded mods with an open-source MPC

Devices1 min read

Akai is getting ready to release the MPC Sample Key, a music keyboard with open-source software. The company is inviting hackers and mod makers to build new sounds for it. Many of the mods were made with vibe coding, which means using AI tools to write code.

Akai invites modders to its new device

Akai has not formally announced the MPC Sample Key yet. But it is already showing off mods that fans have built. Akai plans to give early devices to developers and to make the device's firmware (the built-in software that runs the hardware) open source. This means anyone can read and change the code.

Key facts

  • The MPC Sample Key has keys and no pads. You play samples with the keys.
  • Its controls include a keyboard, a pitch wheel, and a mod wheel.
  • Akai showed mods that add synths, including Native Instruments Massive.
  • Some mods run a completely custom operating system with several synths in it.
  • The regular MPC Sample is also shown running synths built with Claude, an AI tool.

What is vibe coding?

Vibe coding is a way of making software by describing what you want to an AI tool. The AI writes the code, and the person checks if it works. It lets people with less coding skill make their own tools and sounds.

Why this matters

Music gear makers used to keep their software closed. Now Akai is asking the community to help shape its products. If the plan works, users could add many new sounds and features, and the device could stay useful for longer.

What to watch

  • The official launch and price of the MPC Sample Key.
  • Whether Akai opens the full software of the MPC Sample.
  • When the software development kit (SDK, a toolkit that helps people build apps) is released.
  • How other inMusic brands follow Akai's community plan.

Here’s how macOS is changing for touchscreens

Apple's first touchscreen MacBook Pro brings the Dynamic Island to macOS, and touch controls such as pinch-to-zoom, swipe-to-scroll, and double-tap to fullscreen. Apple is not making major system-wide changes for touch; most of the touch functionality will live in individual apps, including Apple's own apps and several third-party apps like Notion, Canva, and Zoom.
